Orvieto, dating back to the Etruscan period, stands on top of a rocky outcrop with almost vertical cliff faces. The city centre is mainly medieval, with a magnificent cathedral and narrow winding, cobbled streets. Among its many attractions, apart from the cathedral, are Saint Patrick's Well, Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo del Popolo and the Papal Palace. It is ideally placed for both Rome and Florence, both being about 1.5 hours drive down the A1 motorway.
