Orbetello is an ancient Etruscan settlement which in time was taken over by the Romans. In the Middle Ages it was held by the Aldobrandeschi family, the city of Orvieto and the Orsini family, until it was captured by the Sienese Republic. In the mid-16th century it was the capital city of the Spanish puppet state and then became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The main sights are its 5th century BC city walls, the remains of the Roman city of Cosa near to Ansedonia, the ruins of the Saint Angelo monastery, the spanish fortress ‘Saline’ near Albinia and the Cathedral of Saint Maria Assunta, built over an Etruscan-Roman temple and restructured in 1375.
